Cassie Rose" came to RMCSR as an unclaimed stray from a municipal shelter. She seems to be the product of a backyard breeder that profited from her numerous litters. She was very thin and straggly-looking with broken cartilage in one ear, toenails curled under her feet and covered in urine and feces. No dog ever needed us more. From the end of November to the beginning of February is enough time to make a huge change in the life of a little Sheltie. She is now what vets refer to as BAR, which means bright, alert and responsive. She is approximately 5 years old, weighing in at 16#. Her bloodwork is much better and she was well enough to be spayed, have a dental and be microchipped. Housebreaking has been a challenge for Cassie but she now seems to understand the concept of only pottying outside. (She still has the occasional pee accident and may forever.) A small companion dog will help in reinforcing what is appropriate in this area. Cassie's foster dad calls her "cute and kinda shy but making huge progress." The 10-year-old child in the family carries her around like a stuffed pooch but Cassie does not seem to mind. She is mostly seen hanging out with another Sheltie and a Sheltie mix. She gains strength from her doggie pals and another gentle dog will be required in her forever home. Cassie has learned her new name and some simple commands since being in foster care. She is a very sweet, very gentle dog that loves to be petted and deserves a great life to make up for the crap she had before. Her "puppy mill kind of life" must have consisted of a very confined space, like a crate or wire pen. Initially, she wandered around the house from room to room, astonished that this is where a dog could be. She has come a long way in a short time. And she needs a loving and supportive family to help her come the rest of the way, to be the best-loved Sheltie of all time.

Please begin the process for adoption by reading our Adoption Policies and, if we sound like the right group for you, fill out our online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously.  Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
