Collie (long coat) : : Female : : Adult : : Large
Dreamer is a blue merle rough-coated Collie with a lot of pizazz! She had humans give up on her when all it would have taken was a good trainer and a compliant owner to make her the best darned dog in the history of the world. Enter....the trainer! Let me introduce you to Ed Russell.
Ed Russell of Luv 'N' Care Dog Training is a certified trainer that is a graduate of the Animal Behavioral College. Ed can introduce your puppy to the sights and sounds of its undiscovered world, can offer obedience classes for all ages and stages, can offer unique solutions to problems both old and new, offers advance shaping for particular objectives (someone remind me to ask what that means?!!) and best of all, he comes to your house if you live in or near the Pueblo area. For example, if you want your dog to be Canine Good Citizen certified, Ed will guide both you and your beloved pooch through the ten step learning program it takes to pass the test. But the part that is the most amazing for me as the Director of RMCSR is that Ed is just a phone call away when I know that a dog needs more than just vet care, love and good food. I tease Ed all the time about having been a canine in a previous existence. He "thinks like a dog."
Ed's assessment of Dreamer is that she was very under-socialized as a young dog and needs to really understand that most humans have value (you will notice that I said MOST!!!!) It is extremely important that introductions be structured in a calm way so that she has a moment to sniff people thoroughly before they reach for her. This may sound like what I call a "no-brainer" but it took Ed to look at the problem and figure out what he was seeing. Go Ed!! Dreamer gets to be what I call my go-to girl. She gets to go to the feed store. She gets to go to the vet to pick up meds or just say hi to everyone. With positive interactions over and over again, she will become the great dog that she has the potential to be. She is over the moon with joy when I say to her, "What a good girl you are, little Dream!" She wags all over.
Dreamer is about 5-6 years old, a 65# spayed female that is up-to-date on all vaccines and is microchipped. She is housebroken and has some very endearing traits. She adores having her silky fur brushed. She will sit on your lap and nibble on your ear. She loves to be sung to. The absolute worst thing we have discovered about Dreamer so far is that she can unstuff a stuffed toy faster than anyone has ever witnessed. The green frog and the stuffed cow bit the dust in under a minute. That indicates that she has a strong jaw and is a little more determined than most Collies. But that is part of who she is and it is important that we acknowledge that and find her just the right humans to understand how to make her the most contented Collie in Colorado. Try saying that one three times fast!
