Learn more about the Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie.
“Miss Leigh” walked into her new foster home, introduced herself to each human and dog pal and announced that she had arrived. She is a beautiful 6 year old tri-colored sheltie. Although quite chubby, she is happy and active, playful and loving and smart and caring, but, as you can see, hates to have her picture taken. She interacts well with all sizes and ages of dogs and would love to rough-house with one her own size. Her current foster home only has “littles,” but she is very gentle in her play with them.
Leigh weighs 51#, but should weigh only about 30-35#. Her front legs are bowed because she has carried this excess weight for too long. Keilie has only lost 2 # so far but needs to lose at least 8 more before she can have a general anesthetic. When she reaches her first target weight loss, PCSR will cover the expense for her dental. We have been told that she is spayed, but because of the excess tummy fat, the vet has not been able to detect an incision scar. She has been micro-chipped and is current on all vaccinations. She has learned to use a dog door and is completely house trained. Leigh spends a lot of time outside monitoring the neighborhood. Learning the dog door has given her the freedom to come and go and she loves it. She does not bark unless warranted.
If you are interested in this remarkable sheltie, she needs a fenced yard with lots of activity and another dog to play with. She is good around children. When an 8-year-old visited, she brought her tug toy to play. When a toddler came to visit, she let herself out the doggie door. LOL It is imperative that Leigh stays on a very strict diet. (We will share all that kind of information with her new family when the time comes.) She is morbidly obese and will die much too young unless she sheds these ugly pounds. Daily exercise, such as multiple walks on leash, are a must. Please read the adoption information section on our website at www.pueblocolliesheltie.org and that should answer most of your basic questions. If that all sounds good to you, please move on to the online application. When we receive applications, they are screened by one of our Board members, reviewed by the foster family and then sent to our Director. Along the way, we will call or e-mail to let you know the status of your application. Leigh is making a wish upon a star tonight. She is dreaming of her very own human beings to share her life with. Could they be you?

From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously.
