We are guessing that Lightfoot is a combination sheltie and border collie. He is a 14#, six-month-old pup with all the positive attributes of each breed in a small package. The little guy is heartworm negative and had great pre-anesthetic bloodwork before we had him neutered. His vaccines are up to date and he is microchipped with a Home Again chip. The bi-black coat is soft and silky with a fuzzy down undercoat. He is eating Blue Buffalo puppy food which is a much better quality than the Purina he had been on. He prefers his kibble with yogurt and warm water on it and has discovered the joy of munching on a dog biscuit. But he has also been known to nibble on fingers and shoes and other inappropriate things and that is the nature of a puppy. With positive things to distract him, like a million toys, he will be less inclined to eat computer cords and cell phones. But puppies are puppies until they outgrow that stage of their lives, and it is not fair to get angry with them for doing puppy things. Humans should be smart enough to put shoes in their closets and books up on a desk. After all, we are the ones with opposable thumbs!
Lightfoot is the smartest pooch I have ever met. In less than a week, he has learned to "sit", "wait", "come", run in and out the doggie door and respond to "where are you, you cute little man?" For a puppy to be that quick to learn is a huge indicator of his overall intelligence. And a dog that is this smart will never be happy just hanging around the house and in the backyard. This is a dog that needs a job! A job does not necessarily mean having a herd of sheep or a flock of chickens to keep track of. It can also include training in obedience or agility or flyball or even the newest sport of "freestyle" which means dancing with your dog. You can find examples of this innovative canine sport on the Internet and it looks like great fun. Lightfoot is smart enough to do any or all of these activities and make you look spectacular in the bargain. So we will only place my little bitty buddy in what is know as a performance home, that is one in which he will learn to "perform."
To begin the process of adoption, we ask you to go to our website at www.pueblocolliesheltie.org and read the adoption information section and then proceed to the online application if you are in agreement with our policies. Our process has been in place for many years and we hold to it. If you are being considered for one of our dogs, you will be notified by e-mail or phone. We match dogs to families and have a pretty good record of success.
Puppies and young children are not a good idea for either the dog or the kids. Although Lightfoot likes kids, we will not place him with children younger than 8 and only if the children are nice to dogs. We will be able to tell that from a meet and greet. We hope that all of our rescued dogs will find great homes before Christmas but we will not compromise the quality of the match just because of the holiday. As we say in our neck of the woods, Happy Collie-days! from all of us to all of you.
