About Nova

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Sable
  • Housetrained: Yes
This darling young female Sheltie came into one of our Colorado municipal shelters as a stray. Her classic Sheltie good looks and youth gave the shelter a reason to hope that her people would come looking for her. But the stray period went by day by day and no one called looking for their little darling. And as each day went by, she became a little more frightened by her surroundings. Shelties are shy by nature and are one of the breeds that don’t do well in shelters. If we were to put ourselves in the place of an abandoned or lost dog, hungry, thirsty, cold and without knowing how to ask for help . . . and then to be snagged by a stranger and taken to a large building. Because this particular pooch was lucky enough to be a Sheltie and landed in a well-run shelter that reaches out to rescues when a dog is too frightened to be placed, we were called and asked to take her. One of our volunteers in that area dropped everything to go and scoop her up. Because she was one of the first dogs to be brought into our program for the New Year, her foster mom named her “Nova.” And once she was out of that terrifying environment, she relaxed and became sweet and people friendly. At about 1 ½ years old and 25#, she has been brought up to date on vaccinations, spayed, microchipped with a Home Again chip and had baseline bloodwork with a negative result on her heartworm test. Nova is bright and alert and very companionable with other dogs and both men and women. In her foster home, she even respects cats. Toddlers and young children would not be appropriate playmates, though, because of her strong herding instinct with occasional nips at ankles and moving feet. It is delightful to see her flip her toys in the air and watch to see where they will land. Nova loves sharing a couch or bed with her humans. If you prefer a dog with all four feet on the floor at all times, Nova may not be the right match for you. With this information from Nova’s fosters Deb and Larry, we have a good idea of who may be her ideal family. Please begin the process for adoption by going to our web site at www.CollieSheltieRescue.org, reading our Policies and Guidelines and, if we sound like the right group for you, proceed to the online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
