Learn more about the Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie.
Sonny Boy lived his entire seven years of life with one family until the day they drove him to a shelter and left without him. It is mind numbing to try to put yourself in the place of a sensitive animal that has no control over what happens to him and to imagine the pain and fear at the chaos of a shelter. (I will be writing a rant on the subject of owner-relinquished dogs one of these days.) Sonny shut down, refusing to eat or drink. If not for the staff at this particular shelter, he would have ended his days on a cold stainless steel table in this shelter because no one from the public would have been interested in this sad Sheltie.
Here it is a new day for Sonny Boy, a neutered male over-sized Sheltie in the easily recognizable sable and white color scheme. This is a charming dog with a gentle demeanor and a companionable way about him. He likes men, women and children although very young children would be a bit much for him. He is good with other dogs and I cannot imagine him harassing cats, bunnies or any other warm-blooded creature. He enjoys a car ride and a walk and will even break into a gentle trot in a fenced backyard.
We expect Sonny to become significantly more active because we have discovered what his family must have overlooked. When we did his baseline blood work, we added a thyroid test because he displayed some potential signs of hypothyroidism. And . . . surprise! He is indeed hypothyroid. This is a metabolic system that regulates a number of body functions, one of them having to do with being “chubby.” We began his thyroid supplementation immediately and that will be needed for his entire lifetime, twice a day. It is a very inexpensive medication and should fit easily into almost anyone’s budget.
Sonny is negative for heartworm disease and has had all of his vaccines updated. He is microchipped with a Home Again chip and his enrollment is included in his adoption package. He eats Precise Senior which is a chicken-based all natural kibble with a tiny tad of canned chicken and some hot water twice a day with that little thyroid pill tucked neatly into it. This pooch is as close to perfect and easy as a dog can be. What a treasure he will be for the right humans.
