Learn more about the Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie. Learn more about the Border Collie.
If you were to put together some of the dearest traits of the Sheltie and the Border Collie and wrap them up in a beautiful blue merle package, you would make Phoenix. Phoenix is a 14-month-old spayed female 35# sheltie mix. We have been told by the person who relinquished her that Phoenix is indeed 1/4 border collie from which she gets her shorter coat and longer legs. She is lightning fast when running straight ahead, especially when she is chasing a BALL!! If she had her own special someone to throw a ball for her consistently for a half-hour at a time, she would be a happy dog and that person would be the center of her universe. In her foster home, Phoenix has chosen Jeff to be that special person so we would love to speak with some of the guys out there that love dogs and want to have a partner to hang with. She would not be a happy dog if left alone during a work day. Some dogs are her pals but some others seem to make her feel anxious. This dog is smart and will need a human or two at least as smart as she is.
Phoenix's foster mom, Tina, uses some lovely adjectives to describe her. "Phoenix is reserved when she first meets someone but warms up quickly as she gets to know you. She has a bit of the pushy personality that can be found in Border Collies with a toy driven side that could be a lot of fun for the right owner. She will be a dream to groom with a short double coat in contrast to the many hours of grooming with the traditional Sheltie coat. The little sweetheart would love to be the kind of true companion that is a bed buddy for cuddling as well as a play partner for active times. But watch out for counter surfing with Phoenix. It will take a bit of consistency to train that out of her. But she is so worth it!"
We would hope to find an active family for Phoenix with good potential for training and maybe even performance possibilities. A smart dog needs humans that will stay at least a couple of chapters ahead in the training manuals. We have some wonderful volunteers in all parts of Colorado that would be glad to share wisdom on almost any issue with new adopters. I bet we have someone very close to you that would enjoy being a mentor to you while you get your "paws wet" with Phoenix.
Please begin the process for adoption by going to our website at www.colliesheltierescue.org, reading our Policies and Guidelines and, if we sound like the right group for you, proceed to the online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
