Patrick is a beautiful blue merle 5-7 year old Collie with a very sweet but sometimes timid disposition. Patrick came to his foster home in Boulder from Kansas in December 2012, intact and heartworm positive. He sailed through the lengthy heartworm treatment under the care of Boulder’s Natural Animal Hospital and is now neutered, vaccinated and ready for adoption.
Patrick is a beautiful blue merle 5-7 year old ColliePatrick is very comfortable when in his foster home or venturing out to the back yard, yet he is still very apprehensive on walks. As an exception, Patrick has befriended a darling toy poodle puppy that lives a few doors down the street. This toy poodle distracts him just enough that he will blissfully follow her (on leash) toward her house. He is very gentle with her and would do very well in a home with another dog that is not intimidating. (Patrick was required to remain fairly inactive through the heartworm treatment so he needed to be in a home without other dogs.) His foster mom thinks that another well-socialized dog may help Patrick be less afraid of the outside world. He has a very playful nature when he feels relaxed in his home environment and would truly enjoy the perfect canine pal. A fenced, big back yard would be great for Patrick to be able to get plenty of exercise with another dog since he doesn’t get too far on his walks due to his fears of parked cars, trash cans mailboxes etc. Most of the time he wants to be inside and beside his humans though. At nighttime hAs far as human companions are concerned, Patrick may do best in a home without children because he is easily startled by loud noises and fast movements and may still need to understand that children are not his siblings when it comes to play. He has also displayed fear of some men; no matter how kind the gentleman. (It is possible that a man with a deep voice was not so nice to him in Kansas.) The adopting couple or individual would need to be very, very patient with Patrick to encourage him to gradually become comfortable with his new surroundings. Anyone taking Patrick for a walk would have to be strong enough to hold him in case he was startled and suddenly yanked on the leash.
Like most Collies, Patrick likes to perform duties for you. Once he feels comfortable in the home, he will let you know if he hears someone is at the door. He does not jump up on any strangers though, and he will visit from a distance at first. He also likes to “herd” the laundry around the house and will put it in a pile for you. His foster mom hasn’t figured out how to train Patrick to pick up the dirty laundry and put it in a basket yet but maybe his forever mom can help Patrick master this unique (and useful) trick!
e wants to sleep on a rug at the end of the human’s bed.
