Collie (long coat) : : Male : : Adult : : Large
On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, we were given the opportunity to take a rough Collie from a municipal shelter here in Colorado. This is one of the enlightened shelters that understands that breed specific rescues play an important part in saving as many dog’s lives as possible.
We had some basic information about the Collie. It was an intact male (surprise! surprise!), perhaps five years old or so. Sable and white and a photo available, showing a handsome dog that had obviously been neglected for some time. If we agreed to take him, he would be neutered and given all vaccines immediately. Of course, we said yes.
I met Dan and Geri on Tuesday evening after they picked him up and even paid his adoption fee to the shelter. (A huge shout-out to Dan and Geri who made magic for this dog in honor of their two beloved Collies.) Even in the dimness of the truck-stop, you could see the matted fur other than where the poor boy had been shaved to the skin. He smelled as bad as any dog I have ever gotten a whiff of. He made the transfer to my van with no fuss at all and we continued south on I-25.
I had tentatively named the dog Garth in honor of a wonderful Sheltie that is no longer on the earth. But as the big sweet Collie laid his head on my shoulder and he gave me his first kiss, I told him what a blessing he was. And his name came from my lips . . . Pilgrim.
We will share his journey with those of you who care so much about dogs. Pilgrim’s Progress.
Update from Pilgrim’s foster mom
Pilgrim is definitely acquainted with living in a house. He bounds down the stairs and hangs in the kitchen almost all day. He also whimpers when I get ready to leave the house and barks excitedly when I come home, even if I’m gone only minutes.
SundancePilgrim is obedient and aims to please, and he gets along very well with Sundance, shown here. He sleeps on a blanket on the floor and probably has been told not to get on bed or furniture because even if he is invited to, he only puts his front paws up.
Pilgrim loves to play fetch with his toys and I’m hoping to see him and Sundance play together. Some effort has been made on Sundance’s part, but Pilgrim would rather play one on one with me.

Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
