Learn more about the Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie.
One of the most rewarding things about working with under socialized dogs, such as puppy mill survivors, is we get to witness the moment in which they discover that someone cares about them. Dapper Dallas is a 7-year-old sable and white male Sheltie. He is thin and seems sad. (That is very hard for a serious dog lover to watch.) It is one week since Dallas came to us from our good friends at National Mill Dog Rescue. It has been a flurry of vet appointments and surgeries. Dallas was neutered and lost 19 teeth in his dental. His poor infected ears have been treated multiple times. He is now eating and drinking like a champ. My guess is that he has had mouth pain for a long time from the rotten teeth. And although he is wearing the "cone of shame" he will hold his head up and trot with me on leash around the property. We went to Hilltop Veterinary Clinic this afternoon for a recheck on his mouth, ears and neuter site. He jumped willingly into the van and came up between the front seats. He gazed at me with love along the drive. And he hopped into my lap at the clinic, much to my surprise. And I think it was a bit of a shock to Dallas himself that he was brave enough to do such a thing. But that moment changed everything. He is now ready to love. We will get much better photos of Dallas in a couple of days. But I would like to start looking for just the right match for Dallas now. He seems more comfortable with women than men. He does not like a lot of hubbub but enjoys the company of a family with conversation and laughter. He likes a 13-year-old girl to stroke him gently on his neck and back and sing to him. And eventually we hope he will shed himself of all the baggage from the Arkansas puppy mill and only remember the good times since he came to Colorado.
