Cherub (formerly Angel) is an eight-year-old tri-color- headed white collie that has had many litters of puppies. I am certain that they were all beautiful and smart and I hope that each of them landed in a wonderful home and is well cared for. But Cherub was not well cared for. She was not permitted to come into the house even when she gave birth. She was fed low quality dog food and had no idea what a treat was. Her beautiful white fur was filthy and matted. And that was how she would have lived the remainder of her life, year after year, in the oppressive heat and the bitter cold.
But because of the lousy economy, her owner could not sell the last couple of puppies from the litter born six months ago. So he relinquished mom, dad and baby all at the same time. What lucky dogs! You will see “My Buddy”, “Calico Molly” and now “Cherub” on the website. They are clean and have had all of the appropriate veterinary care. Cherub is resting companionably on my foot while I pound away on the keyboard. Buddy is a couple of feet away, watching and contemplating a nap. Sweet Molly is joyously helping to trim the Christmas tree and pouncing on a snowball to make it disappear. Nothing makes us happier than having this kind of impact on the lives of collies and shelties.
Before we schedule surgery, we draw blood for a heartworm test and a pre-anesthetic panel of blood chemistries and CBC. Because everything was within normal limits, we proceeded with Cherub’s spay and a dental that involved cutting away all the excess gum tissue that had nearly covered her teeth. She came out of the anesthetic and back to her foster home for 10 days of softened food and pain meds. It is about three weeks since Cherub was relinquished and she has made huge strides. She is now housebroken. It does not take long for a collie that lives to please humans to figure out that “mom” is much happier when you potty outside. A frown is all that is required, not harsh treatment. She interacts nicely with both male and female dogs in her foster home and all ages of humans, from small children through us older folks. She loves to welcome visitors and always offers her paw in return for a treat.
If it is possible for Cherub to live out her life with her “mate”, we will entertain that possibility. If the universe has something else in store for this precious little girl, we will pursue that option. In any case, we have promised Cherub that never again will she be cold or hungry. She will always have love and a soft bed. And she will be able to love and trust the humans in her life to the last beat of her heart. Because that is the pledge we have made to her, we will screen very carefully for potential adopters. We ask you to read the adoption information section on our website at www.pueblocolliesheltie.org and then proceed to the online application if you are in agreement with our policies and requirements. The more detailed the information is that you are willing to share with us, the better we can guide you toward the right pooch for your family. It seems that there is a perfect match in dogs as there is in human relationships. Our goal is to find that “click.” If Yenta, the Matchmaker better describes who we are, so be it! Let’s see if we can make a couple of holiday miracles before the year ends.
Please begin the process for adoption by reading our Adoption Policies and, if we sound like the right group for you, fill out our online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well. |
