A lovely spayed female, tri-colored rough Collie has come to hang out with us until she has a forever home of her own. She is around 3 years of age, in excellent health and all of her vaccines are up to date. We had been told that Valentine was a dominant female but the foster family would not agree with that. They feel that Val is unsure of herself and therefore she may “be snarky” first rather than let another dog get the upper hand (oops, I mean paw!). Some obedience classes may be just the thing for an insecure dog. If she feels more confident, the other behavior may disappear. In any case, at least a Level 1 obedience class or beginner agility training will make a human and a dog into much more of a team. And that is what we are after, isn’t it? The true human/canine bond and all it implies.
Valentine is completely housebroken and a good car traveler. If you have ever had a dog that gets carsick, you will understand why this is such a big deal! She knows her name, eats a good quality kibble with no hesitation and seems to like both men and women equally. We will have to check out her relationship with children. Once again, we had been led to believe that Valentine was not good with cats but in her foster home, she has had no issue with the felines. At 55#, she is looking good and seems to be feeling fine.
As we often see with dogs these days, Valentine has been bumped around a bit from home to home. It is heartbreaking to these gentle herding dogs to lose their “pack” (both other canines and humans) and see them try to regain their footing with an all new group. What we want for Val, and all of her Collie and Sheltie buddies, is the right match in a home on the first try. That is why we ask so many questions and take the time to listen to the answers.
