Collie (long coat) : : Female : : Baby : : Medium
Dakota is a stunning 11-month-old tri-colored rough Collie. She is spayed and up to date on vaccinations as well as being heartworm negative and microchipped with a Home Again chip. She is sweet and just a tad shy at first but she really shines in her interactions both with other dogs and especially with people. When she settles down with you for a nice long cuddle, you can watch the energy seep out of her. As her foster mom, Janet, says “you can pet her to sleep!” But when she wakes from a snooze, off she goes to explore something new or to conquer a new skill like climbing stairs (which were obviously new to her) or getting past being cautious of a car ride (perhaps from a bad experience). In any case, Dakota is a fabulous adolescent Collie girl with a whole life of fun ahead of her.
We always recommend at least a Level 1 obedience class for a family and their new dog. It is especially important for a puppy like Dakota that has some gaps in her training. Training terms like “sit,” “shake” and “down” are already known to her and she will dazzle you with her responsiveness. She needs some work on “off” which means to not jump on a person. But her new humans will need to know the same things she does and make sure that they understand the importance of positive reinforcement training. Dakota still does some puppy chewing and will need lots of appropriate things that she is allowed to chomp on. It is much easier to buy Kongs and other chew toys than to replace your favorite black suede pumps! This is spoken by a woman that knows!
All puppies are precious and Dakota is certainly no exception. And the more time that is spent with a growing pup, the better. To that end, we will give preference to a family where one of the adults stays home or only works part time. Toddlers might get accidentally run over by this enthusiastic youngster. So kids over 10-ish would be best. And Dakota has requested another playful dog to be a good role model and best playmate when the kids are in school. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
Please begin the process for adoption by reading our Adoption Policies and, if we sound like the right group for you, fill out our online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well. |
