Patches, the 17# tri-colored Sheltie, must have belonged to someone who loved her earlier in her life, before she became a breeder dog on a commercial puppy farm. Someone taught her that if she danced around on her back legs, humans would smile and tell her she was adorable and offer her a treat. And someone taught her to kiss a person’s nose. And jump onto a lap and wiggle with delight. These are not things that a dog learns in a puppy mill. How someone could have sold or abandoned this little bundle is beyond my comprehension. But then again, whoever owned her “de-barked” her. For those of you who are not familiar with this term, de-barking is done by snipping the vocal cords either done straight through the throat or down the gullet depending upon the skill and cost of the surgery. Although I was tempted to do this with my human kids (just kidding!!), the surgery is barbaric and even illegal in some states. Not illegal in Colorado yet although most reputable veterinarians refuse to do the procedure. PatchesBecause Patches had an extensive dental with multiple extractions that took quite a bit of time and she came to us in heat, we have had to delay her spay for a few weeks. She is now out of heat and her UTI is cleared up. We will still err on the side of caution and when we find the right match for Patches, we will spay her in the home of her adopter with their personal vet. This is not what we do ordinarily but each pooch is different and their needs are specific. If we trust someone enough to adopt a dog to them, hopefully we trust them enough to bend this rule for a few weeks. As my good friend Tom would say, “Trust but verify.” Go Tomas! Patches enjoys the company of other dogs unless they push their noses a little too far to sniff. She learns quickly and may even have a sense of humor when she is settled in. She likes our 10-year-old granddaughter as well as men and women. Cats are an unknown but since she may well be out-weighed by a kitty, I doubt that it would be a problem. A friend who has met Patches suggested that she might have potential as a therapy dog, mostly for emotional support for folks who were ill. If I were to choose a life for her, I think that would be it. She is charming and absolutely precious.
