Skye Dog is finally having the life she was meant to have.  The life every dog deserves.  She came to RMCSR on 11/20/22 in deplorable condition from a puppy mill in Oklahoma.  Our dear friends at National Mill Dog Rescue were offered three Shelties that breeders no longer wanted.  (That is the mission of this remarkable group of humans, to locate them and agree to take them and give them every opportunity to have a good life.)  When Shelties land in their laps, they call RMCSR and ask if we have room for these cast-off breeder moms.

Skye has had the very best care with our team of Veterinarians.  Hilltop Pet Clinic in Pueblo West is our go-to for primary care, God Bless them.  Dr. Crook and Dr. Barber will make time for RMCSR needs.   Southern Colorado Internal Medicine Specialists for the tough to diagnose conditions and expertise on what to tackle first.  And Colorado Canine Orthopedics for the consultations and recommended surgical procedures.  Skye has a new left hip, replaced by Dr. DeTora of CCO.  Her post-op physical therapy was provided by Exercise for Balance in Colorado Springs.

But none of this "magic" for Skye would have been possible without the loving care of Skye's foster parents, Pat Topping and Robert Hadley.  Pat and Bob taught her not to be afraid of humans, how to be a part of their dog pack (small dog pack but still a big adjustment for Skye) and to approach life with gusto.  They took her to every medical appointment and paced the floor when she was in surgeries.  They made excuses for her when she threw up on each of them.  They carried her favorite dog bed with them when they went to visit grandchildren.  In short, they loved her like they had given birth to her.

I am a great believer in miracles.  A previous adopter came forward at just the right moment and has fallen in love with Skye.  Skye has gone to Jane's house to make sure it is the right fit.  With her two dogbeds and her dog food and her special dishes and her favorite blanket and all the love RMCSR could pour into one little puppy mill survivor.  A whole year of love for one precious life.

Skye is a a blue merle Sheltie that is typical of the throw away mentality of the commercial breeding industry.  At 8 years of age, she could no longer carry a litter.  Her uterus was in shreds as we discovered at the time of her spay.  She also lost 18 teeth in her dental and others had already fallen out.  Colorado Canine Orthopedics needed Skye to be in better medical condition before they could address her bilateral hip issues.  So she has been on a healthy canned and kibble diet with supplements for her anemia.  But on further review with a board-certified radiologist, Skye may have infection in her bones and joints and needs to be seen by Southern Colorado Internal Medicine Specialists.    Drs. Crook and Barber at Hilltop Pet Clinic are managing her pain and will follow up on bloodwork, etc.

We keep reviewing Skye with the available specialty clinics in Colorado Springs.  Southern Colorado Internal Veterinary Medicine (SCIVM) has cleared Skye for whatever orthopedic procedures will best preserve her stability in the pelvis and maintain her ability to walk.  So back we go to CCO for another review.

In the meantime, dogs keep coming in, needing everything that new dogs need.  Bloodwork, spays and neuters, dentals.  Can you please help with a sponsorship for Skye?

Please begin the process for adoption by reading our Adoption Policies and, if we sound like the right group for you, fill out our online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously.  Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
