Thor is a young adult oversized lap dog.  We are guessing that he may be a Great Dane/Australian Shepherd mix.  Without having a DNA test done, no one will ever know for sure.  But what we do know about him is that he adores humans and is smart and fun and food motivated and that helps with training.  And he needs training.  Voice commands will not work because Thor is DEAF.  Please read that again.  Thor is DEAF.

This dog came to us as a stray from one of our municipal shelters.  It is unlikely that a special needs dog with no manners would have made a successful transition from the shelter to a forever home.  But having some time in a home environment gives him a better chance to learn some basic skills.  That is the specific reason that the use of foster homes is the best way to place companion dogs appropriately.

In the week that Thor has been in foster care with Rocky Mountain Collie and Sheltie Rescue, he has learned to walk on a leash without dragging his foster mom down the road.  (Super important, right?)  He has learned the "watch me" command by bringing a treat from his nose to my face.  He sleeps through the night without howling.  (Hallelujah!)  He understands that peeing and pooping must wait until he is outside.  (One of my favorite skills!)  And today, he helped me to straighten up what I call Doggie Central.  It gave me the opportunity to spend extended time with Thor as the focus of everything I needed to do.  And he did so well.  He still has many things to learn but if the right home is waiting for him, he will bond with his own humans like he is bonding with me.

Thor is about 2-years old, a neutered male that is up to date on all vaccines, microchipped and has normal bloodwork including a negative heartworm test.  He will come with everything he has claimed as his including dogfood and toys, etc.

I don't know how to tell you what his ideal home will look like.  Kind and gentle people, certainly.  Absolutely secure fenced yard for his safety when off leash.  No toddlers who might startle him since he is deaf.  And from there, we will see who is willing to be Thor's family.  Completed application first which you will find on our website at www.colliesheltierescue.org.

Please begin the process for adoption by reading our Adoption Policies and, if we sound like the right group for you, fill out our online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously.  Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
