Hello world - meet Darling Dexter! Dexter is an absolute doll. He came to us from a shelter in Colorado Springs, an owner surrender in pretty bad shape, the poor kiddo. Several years ago he broke his right front leg, and his vet at the time repaired it using a metal plate and screws. (Don't panic - this is a pretty standard protocol for dogs with bad breaks to their bones.) When he arrived at the shelter, some of his metal repair parts had come loose and were sticking out of at his wrist!!! When we learned about Dexie, we knew we were the rescue for him. Heck, his foster mom drove down from Denver two times to try to bring him home! It all worked out for the best, though, and his injury is on the mend. He no longer has any metal parts in his cute little body, and his bones have healed, although his leg is bowed just a smidge because of his owie. And then the poor sweet little dude was shaved! He's a nekked little boy right now, just in time for the cold. It's okay, though, because his foster sister is gonna share her sweater with him (she tries to act like she likes her sweater, but honestly, I think she'd rather Dexter keep it)! Dexter's new vet looked him over and was concerned about how nekked he is (because his fur is growing out extremely slowly), and his weight. Oh yeah, did we mention that Dexie is overweight? He needs to lose at least 15 lbs. And guess what's causing all this? He's hypothyroid - just needs a little pill twice a day. We started him on his meds, and will post updates on Dexter's fur-recovery-weight-loss program. It's likely he will need this low-cost medication for the rest of his life. But here is the absolute best part about Dexter: he is one heckuva wonderful dog. One look at his face and you'll be head over heels in love with him. But what about his personality, you ask? Oh my goodness, you'll fall in love with that too. He's housebroken, likes toys, seems to like to play (although it's hard to tell because he still has an owie, and his foster brother is a toy hog), gives kisses, sits, and comes like a dream. Maybe his name should be Dreamy Dexter?!? Right now Dexter is in treatment, so he's not ready for adoption yet. But he's taking his foster mom on a walk every chance he gets, and he's talked his foster mom into giving him massages all the time because, as he told her, "It'll help my fur grow back." We'd love to have you sponsor Dexter, and as soon as he can ditch his sweater (!) and lose some weight, he'll be available for adoption.
